Dr. Alexander’s story

This is my story

Hi, I’m Dr. Darlicia Alexander, a wife, mother of four, and grandmother of two. My journey with weight loss has been a lifelong battle, and like many of you, I’ve faced the frustration, disappointment, and confusion that comes with it. In fact, I started my first diet in the summer of sixth grade—a moment when the pressure of societal expectations began to shape my relationship with food and my body. This began a cycle of yo-yo dieting that would follow me into adulthood.

As I entered college and medical school, the stress of a demanding schedule, fast food, poor sleep, and little exercise set the stage for significant weight gain. Despite my medical background, I still believed that a little calorie restriction and exercise could keep me on track, but the weight would always come back—along with a few extra pounds each time.

Over the years, I tried every commercial diet out there: Weight Watchers, Slim For Life, HCG, protein shakes, hypnotherapy, and countless others. Each time, I would lose a significant amount of weight, only to fall back into old habits and see the weight return, sometimes even more than before.

Then, as I entered my early 40s, weight loss became even more difficult. The excess weight began causing chronic back and knee pain, ankle swelling, and overall misery. To make things even more complicated, I was dealing with perimenopause—something no one had really prepared me for, not even my doctor. My body composition began to change in ways I hadn’t experienced before, with weight stubbornly accumulating around my middle. No matter how I ate or exercised, I couldn’t seem to shed it. I was absolutely miserable.

Over the course of 40 years, I’ve lost over 100 pounds three different times, and countless more pounds through various diets, only to gain it all back. But despite the setbacks, this struggle has fueled my passion and dedication to truly understand what works when it comes to weight loss, health, and wellness.

Now, I’m committed to helping others who find themselves in the same cycle of frustration. As someone who has experienced the emotional and physical toll of weight management firsthand, I bring a compassionate, science-based approach to weight loss. I believe in empowering people to break free from the cycle of yo-yo dieting and build lasting, sustainable habits that promote both physical and mental well-being. My goal is to guide individuals toward a healthier lifestyle that doesn’t rely on temporary fixes but instead focuses on real, lasting change—one that works for their body, mind, and life.

With my experience and medical background, I have gained a deep understanding of the complexities surrounding weight loss, especially as we age. I now know that it’s not just about counting calories or following the latest fad diet, but about understanding our bodies, hormones, and how they respond to the foods we eat and the activities we engage in.

It’s time to stop fighting our bodies and start working with them. Let’s embrace a balanced, mindful approach to health and wellness that’s sustainable and realistic for the long term. Together, we can break free from the cycle of frustration and create a path toward a healthier, happier life.
